Etienne Méhul was a French composer who lived from 1763 to 1817. Having shown some talent at the keyboard as a child, he was sent to Paris as a teenager to study music. His early compositions, which included instrumental and vocal works, were not successful, but he made his breakthrough in 1790 with his Opera Comique "Euphrosine et Coradin." He composed 42 operas, with "Joseph" being perhaps the most significant. He composed four symphonies, ballets, cantatas, patriotic songs (including some for Napoleon), and piano concertos
